WWTP simulators based on the PWM library. CEIT/Conaqua
The Environmental Engineering Unit of CEIT, in collaboration with the partners of the NOVEDAR_Consolider project, has developed a new Plant-Wide Modelling (PWM) library, that consists of a very extensive, updated and complete set of mathematical models able to describe the dynamic behaviour of all the processes and technologies that can be part of a modern and advanced wastewater treatment plant.
The new model library eases the construction and dynamic simulation of any possible combination of conventional and advanced treatment processes, analysing in a fast and rigorous manner both the environmental and economic efficiency.

This video shows how CEIT developed the PWM library and how the spin-off Conaqua uses this knowledge in their consulting services.

PANAMMOX®: Two-step partial-nitritation/anammox process for the treatment of ammonium-rich wastewater. UdG/Ferrovial Servicios
The Lequia group of the University of Girona in collaboration with Ferrovial Servicios have developed a robust technology for autotrophic nitrogen removal from ammonium-rich wastewater with complex matrix, such as landfill leachates. The so called PANAMMOX® process is a two-step partial-nitritation/anammox process, which configuration has been optimized to efficiently treat highly nitrogenous wastewater with extreme conditions of conductivity, complex COD (mainly refractory) and influent variations.

The video explains how the technology was born to cover the issues from a real concern (the treatment of leachates) from landfilling facilities, its basis and the successful scale-up to pilot scale and full industrial scale.

Microaerobic Digestion. H2S free biogas. UVa/SOCAMEX
The Environmental Technology group of the University of Valladolid and the company SOCAMEX, have applied microaerobic process to control H2S in the biogas produced in sewage sludge digestion. This operational strategy permits to obtain a free H2S biogas maintaing the removal efficiencies and methane production.
Since the process occurs in the digester, an additional biogas treatment unit is not needed in contrast to existing technologies.

This video shows the evolution of the developed process, from the first laboratory to the prototype at WWTP of Burgos.

Environmental Decision Support System. UdG/Aqualogy
The Laboratory of Chemical and Environmental Engineering (LEQUIA) of the University of Girona has developed a Decision Support System for the selection of alternatives in the design of wastewater treatment stations. The NOVEDAR_EDSS integrates expert and bibliographic knowledge and also evaluates the economic and environmental costs of alternative proposals.

This video shows how the group has developed this tool and how important is their collaboration with Aqualogy for the commercialization process.

Continuous Thermal Hydrolysis Process for sewage sludge pre-treatment. UVa/Aqualogy
The Environmental Technology group of the University of Valladolid and the company Aqualogy, have developed a continuous thermal hydrolysis process for sewage sludge pre-treatment (HTC). This technology permits optimize the anaerobic digestion, increasing the biogas production while improves the digester operation as well as the characteristics of the sludge digester.
Since the thermal hydrolysis system is energy self-sufficient, energy supply is not needed for the pre-treatment unit.

This video shows the evolution of the developed process, from the first laboratory plant to the current industrial plant that treats all secondary sludge generated in the STP of Valladolid.

Advanced data management tool and dynamic plant simulator for the Galindo-Bilbao WWTP. CEIT/CABB
The Environmental Engineering Unit of CEIT-IK4 and the Bilbao Bizkaia Water Consortium have developed an Advanced Data Manager and Operation Simulator for Galindo-Bilbao WWTP.

This manager synthesizes all the data available in the plant and generates useful information for operators and plant managers, so they can take decisions in a more agile way.
The simulator allows us to propose new strategies for control operation and optimize energy cost for the WWTP.

The video shows how the mathematical methodolgy developed by CEIT-IK4 in the Novedar_Consolider Project has allowed to develop both tools.

ELAN®. Tecnologies based on Anammox Process. USC/AQUALIA
The Environmental Engineering and Bioprocesses Group of the University of Santiago de Compostela and the company Aqualia have developed an autotrophic denitrification process in one stage, based on the Anammox process, the so called ELAN® (Eliminación Autótrofa de Nitrógeno).

This video shows the way how from the initial idea, born in the research center, the development of this technology and its scaling-up at pilot plant in a municipal STP (Guillarei, Pontevedra) were possible.
